The Short Version.
My photographic style is honest, emotion driven and unobtrusive. I mix natural documentary style images with a small amount of creative Bride and Groom portraits. My goal is to capture the whole story of your day. Coverage starts with Bridal prep and finishes well into the evening dancing.
I include family groups and detail photographs in my coverage, but tend not to show them in my portfolio as I like to focus on the more creative and emotional parts of the day.
Each couple receives planning sessions, the options of a pre-wedding shoot and a second photographer at the wedding, and fully finished images. I also offer top quality albums.
Over the years I have photographed every type of wedding, in every type of venue, and in all weathers! I have full public liability and professional indemnity insurance.
I love photographing weddings and look forward to hearing about yours!
The Long Version!
I’m Simon Gilbert and I’m the principal photographer at Gilbert and Evans and your point of contact as I also look after our customer service and studio management. Attention to detail is key!
My photographic adventure started in earnest in the early 2000’s. Shortly after that I met Helen Evans, a talented photographer, and our mutual love of photography resulted in two exciting things- our building a darkroom for our personal work and the beginning of a great collaborative relationship that ran for many years.
My goal of turning a passion into something much more professional resulted in ‘Gilbert and Evans Wedding Photography’. I photographed my first wedding in 2004 and loved it, thriving on the unpredictable nature of a wedding and the joy of capturing the decisive moment, and I haven’t looked back since, enjoying the snowballing excitement of developing my technique, shooting one beautiful wedding after another and building a strong business that I’m very proud of.
What I Do.
I love storytelling (photojournalistic/ reportage/ documentary) wedding photography because I believe that nothing staged can ever equal the value and emotional impact of a genuine, spontaneous moment.
My approach is very simple- full day coverage, in a documentary style- from getting ready through to the evening dancing, plus some family group shots and some stylish Bride and Groom portraits. You’ll find that I’m as excited about your big day as you are- you’ll enjoy me being there and your images will reflect that.
I’m based in the South West of the UK but work nationally and internationally, taking my unique style of photography to the loveliest couples and finest venues around.
I do everything possible to create a wonderful experience and beautiful images for our couples. Here are some of the things I do differently from other photographers to achieve this…
Getting To Know You.
If booked, a ‘getting to know you’ shoot takes place a month or two before your big day- we’ll spend a couple of hours together wandering, chatting and making some images in a gorgeous outdoor setting. Lots of fun, gorgeous pictures and great for easing any concerns about being photographed!
Although I’m primarily a documentary style photographer -capturing what happens around me- I like to spend some time (about a month before your wedding) discussing your schedule for the day, your family group shot requirements and anything else you think I should know. A big part of good wedding photography is being prepared!
One or two photographers, all day.
My storytelling style means so much more than photographing the ceremony and some group shots, and I know that many of the most wonderful moments happen outside of the main part of the day. That’s why I start with you getting ready and go on until after your first dance.
Documentary Wedding Photography.
Or reportage or photojournalism or candid. The names change but the principal stays the same- because it’s your day to enjoy, not mine to interfere with, I discreetly photograph what actually happens and concentrate on capturing all the atmosphere, emotion and beautiful real moments. It’s a huge skill and something I work very hard at because these moments only happen once, and usually in the blink of an eye, and I’ll never say “Could you just pretend to do that again”!
The Way I See- light, composition and the moment.
Good pictures are those that contain a special moment in time- something real and meaningful- but I try to go a step further with each image and position myself carefully in relation to the light, framing the shot uniquely to really bring that moment to life as a still image. It’s not easy but that challenge is one of the reasons I love my work so much.
I’m happy to spend some time doing some family line-ups and (unlike the stereotypical grumpy wedding photographer) I keep it fun and friendly!
Later on I’ll do some portraits with just the two of you and it’s a win/win situation because we all get gorgeous images, and the two of you also get a little bit of time alone- a calm, romantic little break from the wonderful busyness of your wedding day.
Whilst I’m a firm believer in getting it right at the time, I make sure that every image is perfect before it leaves the studio. The goal is always timeless elegance and you’ll never find faddy ‘effects’ that date all too quickly on my images.
Discs and Albums.
Every couple gets a password protected online gallery and high resolution image files on a disc, as well as a choice of beautiful, premium quality albums. I don’t go to all this effort just to present your images badly!
My Promise To You.
I’ll be relaxed and fun to be around but I’ll work my socks off at the same time.
I’ve photographed a lot of weddings and I know I’ll get beautiful images for you no matter what circumstances fate might throw at us.
I’ll personally prepare your photographs with care and attention to detail, resulting in beautiful pictures that won’t date as the years roll by.
Throughout the whole process you’ll get a level of service and communication that makes you feel like you’re my only clients.
